John Murray Forbes is an American businessman. He was born in Bordeaux on 23 February 1813 and died in Boston on 12 October 1898. He was a railway magnate and president, in 1850s, of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and Michigan Central Railroad.
Forbes was the child of a wealthy and well-known family. Forbes immigrated from Scotland as a young boy to the U.S. James Grant Forbes was Forbes' father and a well-known Scottish diplomat. After a brief time, the family settled down in Milton, Massachusetts. Although his parents were successful businessmen and he was unhappy with the environment, he decided to settle in Milton. Forbes married Dorothy Murray, a daughter of a prominent Scottish family, in Boston in 1769. During his time in Canton, Forbes became one of the first railroad investors and landowners in the United States.

Francis Blackwell Forbes
Francis Blackwell Forbes, the son of John Murray Forbes and a member the Forbes family, was a clergyman. He was the great-grandson and great-granddaughter of Rev. John Forbes was the great-grandson and grandson James Grant Forbes. In addition, he was a pioneer in the field of Chinese botany and was responsible for promoting the Shanghai Country Club. He also wrote papers concerning the Burlingame Expedition. The family eventually moved to Europe in the early 1880s, where Forbes eventually joined the firm Russell & Co. After this, he became active in the Chinese business world, including founding the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company and operating flat-bottomed steamers up the Yangtze River.
Forbes was born in New York City 11 August 1839. His parents were John Murray Forbes (1807-1885) & Anne Howell (1849-1865). On 8 May 1867, he married Isabel Clark in New York City. They had three sons: William Howell Forbes (1837-1896), Henry De Courcy Forbes (1849-1920), & Paul Revere Forbes (1860-1936). The family owned a number businesses in New York as well as abroad.
Robert Bennet Forbes
Robert Bennet Forbes was an ocean captain and merchant of China trade. He was a Massachusetts native, born near Boston in 1809. He studied briefly in France and then returned to Boston to complete secondary school. He was also an active participant in the opium and shipbuilding industries. He generously donated his time and funds to charitable causes throughout his lifetime.
